The story is about Jeannette Walls and how her family is always on the run, avoiding paying bills, living in complete filth, trying to avoid Child Protective Services and doing what they are able to barely survive. When Jeannette sees her homeless mother digging through trash one day in New York City, it reminds Walls of all she has been through in her life. After her father's heart attack death, Jeannette realizes that even though her parents were an embarrassment to her in the past, she did learn a lot from them, including the importance of freedom and accepting your past, according to CliffNotes.com.
