When Jeannette sees her homeless mother digging through trash one day in New York City, it reminds Walls of all she has been through in her life. After her father's heart attack death, Jeannette realizes that even though her parents were an embarrassment to her in the past, she did learn a lot from them, including the importance of freedom and accepting your past, according to CliffNotes.com.
The movie version of the book, as of December 2015, is still in the works. It is planned that Brie Larson will play the part of Jeannette, and the film will also star Woody Harrelson. It will be directed by Destin Cretton. Lionsgate will produce the film.
