Gem Theatre is a historical two-level theater built in 1927 in the style of Spanish Revival architecture. Known back then as the Little Theatre, it originally showed foreign movies, switching to live theater productions in 1960 when it changed its name to The Vanguard. Renamed the Gem in 1967, it fell into disuse in 1978. The theater underwent full restoration in 1990 and moved five blocks to its present location in 1997 to make way for the construction of Comerica Park. No longer a movie house or live theatre, Gem Theatre hosts exclusive private events and weddings.
