"Private Vegas” included a marketing campaign inviting fans to pay $294,038 to experience possessing a copy of the book for 24 hours. After this time the book was to explode. How this was to be achieved is unknown. The price also included a first-class flight to an undisclosed location, two nights’ stay in a luxury hotel, 14-karat gold-plated binoculars and a five-course dinner with the author. Fans with a little less money on their hands could vie for access to an advance digital copy of the author’s book via Patterson's "Self Destructing Book" website. The site gave readers 24 hours to read the novel. Gimmicks included being able to watch the progress of other readers and steal their time for accessing the book.
