Chinese chalk is banned for purchase in the United States; however, it may still be found in small markets. The National Pesticide Information Center recommends purchasing legally registered insecticidal chalks instead.
A safer version of insecticide chalk is manufactured by companies such as Black Flag and sold in retail locations and online shops. Legal versions are approved because they contain chemical ingredients with known adverse safety effects. These safer chalks come packaged in plastic containers, which better protect people from direct skin contact. Safer packaging also protects children from being harmed by the product. Chinese chalk is considered hazardous because it is not safely packaged, and the chalk's ingredients are mostly unknown.
