"For Love of the Game" is a sports film that follows the perfect game of a star baseball pitcher who reminisces about his past career and his relationship with his girlfriend. It is based on a novel of the same title written by Michael Shaara.
The film begins with the Detroit Tigers travelling to New York to play their season-ending series. Since the Tigers are already losing, they are only interested in playing for their pride, but for pitcher Billy Chapel, played by actor Kevin Costner, this game may be the most critical of his life.
Billy is already known as a famous pitcher, but he is on the tail end of his career, has a losing record on the season, and is suffering from a painful hand injury. To make matters worse, his relationship with his girlfriend is on the rocks. As Billy heads to Yankee Stadium for his last start of the year, he reflects on his girlfriend, Jane, played by actress Kelly Preston, and, in a series of flashbacks, remembers the ups and downs of the relationship.
As the game progresses, Billy is dominating the game while his mind is elsewhere. He gets so occupied with his thoughts that he does not notice that he is pitching a perfect game until he sees the scoreboard. After he finishes his perfect game, he finds Jane at the airport and the two reconcile.
