The books in the Mitford series in order are: "At Home in Mitford," "A Light in the Window," "These High, Green Hills," "Out to Canaan," "A New Song," "A Common Life: The Wedding Story," "In This Mountain," "Shepherds Abiding," "Light From Heaven," and "Somewhere Safe with Somebody Good." In addition to these books, two Christmas themed Mitford books have been published.
Jan Karon, the author of the Mitford series, originally published her stories in the local newspaper as installments. Later, these installments became "At Home in Mitford," the first book in the series. Reprinted more than 80 times, the series has been nominated for the American Booksellers Book of the Year award three times. Other books in the series won Gold Medallion and Christy awards.
Karon began her writing career in advertising. She advanced by leaving writing samples on her boss's desk and won several awards. When she turned 50, she left advertising to pursue her childhood dream of becoming an author. Karon had a difficult time writing a novel until she woke up one night with the character of Episcopal priest, Father Tim Kavanagh, in her head. She began writing about him and the Mitford series came to life.
