"The Clan of the Cave Bear," first in Auel's Earth's Children series, is a popular work of fiction. It centers on the life of Ayla, a young Cro-Magnon girl living in prehistoric times. Ayla is orphaned as the result of an earthquake and winds up coming of age among a clan of Neanderthals who take her in. "The Clan of the Cave Bear" was made into a motion picture starring Darryl Hannah in 1986.
"The Valley of Horses," second in Auel's Earth's Children series, follows Ayla after she is cast out of the Neanderthal clan that adopted her. Ayla is forced to defend herself as she encounters a primitive landscape and dangerous animals. She is searching for her original tribe, a group of Cro-Magnons known as "The Others." "The Valley of the Horses" was called "shiningly intense" by Publishers Weekly.
Auel grew up in Chicago. As of 2015, her novels have sold more than 45 million copies worldwide.
