There are eight books in the "Love Comes Softly" series by Janette Oke. In order of publication date, they are "Love Comes Softly," "Love's Enduring Promise," "Love's Long Journey," "Love's Abiding Joy," "Love's Unending Legacy," "Love's Unfolding Dream," "Love Takes Wing" and "Love Finds a Home." The books are categorized as Christian historical fiction. The series follows the lives of Marty Claridge and her children as they adapt to life and find love on the American prairie.
In 2003, the "Love Comes Softly" series was adapted by Hallmark into a made-for-TV movie series starring Katherine Heigl as Marty Claridge. The movies share the same titles as the books; however, there are 10 movies in total as of 2015, with two additions to the saga that are not found in the book series: "Love Begins" and "Love's Everlasting Courage." These two movies are prequels and follow Clark Davis in his early days before he meets and marries Marty Claridge.
In addition, Hallmark released a Christmas special titled "Love's Christmas Journey" in 2012. This movie focuses on Ellie King, one of Marty's recently-widowed daughters.
Janette Oke was not involved in adapting her novels for the screen, but she was pleased with the efforts of Michael Landon Jr, who directed the first four movies in the series.
