“Basket Case,” “Strip Tease,” and “Bad Monkey” are some books by Carl Hiaasen. The author is a journalist with the Miami Herald who has written and co-written over 20 adult and young adult novels, as well as short stories and works of non-fiction.
“Basket Case” is a novel about Jack Tagger, a has-been reporter who now writes obituaries. When he encounters the mystery of a dead rock star, he has the chance to revive his investigative journalism career. He faces resistance from the singer’s widow who is benefiting from the publicity.
“Strip Tease” tells the story of David Dilbeck, a congressman in the middle of an election campaign who is hospitalized after a drunken fight at a strip club. Dilbeck faces a number of blackmailers who threaten to use the knowledge of this event to destroy his reputation. He unsuccessfully pursues one of the dancers, Erin Grant, as a potential romantic interest. The novel was adapted to a film in 1996 starring Burt Reynolds as Dilbeck and Demi Moore as Grant.
“Bad Monkey” is set in Florida and the Bahamas. Andrew Yancy of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a reported boating accident and shark attack that may be a cover-up for murder. His only piece of evidence is the frozen human arm of his victim.
