"Walk Two Moons" is a young adult novel about a young girl, Salamanca Tree Hiddle, who sets out on a cross-country trek to visit her mother. Her companions along the way are her grandparents, whom she entertains by telling them stories about her new friend, Phoebe.
Salamanca's own story has very strong parallels to that of her friend, Phoebe. In both cases, the girls are dealing with issues caused when their mothers have left their fathers and begun new lives. The major themes of the book are developing new relationships, cultural identity and dealing with grief. The book contains surprising twists and an unexpected conclusion.
