Joel Houston is a musician, songwriter and pastor. Since 2010, he has been co-pastoring Hillsong Church NYC, a wildly successful congregation of thousands of young urbanites in a space that looks more like a club than a church.
The son of Hillsong's founders Bobbie and Brian Houston, Houston has been immersed in the evangelical church's culture from birth. Born Sept. 19, 1979, Houston soon discovered that he had musical talent. By 2002, he was a vocalist with Hillsong United, a flourishing worship band that originated as part of Hillsong Church.
A long way from his humble roots as a bassist and contributor to various projects, Houston serves as creative director for Hillsong Church globally, with many of the songs he's written and recorded being sung from the pews of churches all across the world. His songs have been translated into 32 different languages. Houston travels the globe performing with the band and spreading the message of the transformative power of Christ.
He is passionate about his family; his wife Esther and son, Zion, make up his family. Together, they serve at the Hillsong Church in New York City where he continues to play music, write songs and co-pastor the church.
