Launched in January 2009, BBC's Farsi-language programming channel, BBC Persian, reports primarily on Iran, although the network does not have an in-country correspondent. With annual funding from the UK government, BBC Persian's head offices are located in London.
BBC Persian is broadcast via satellite to residents of Iran and surrounding countries. The Iranian government has not been supportive of the channel, though, and has blocked its satellite transmissions on several occasions. At times, BBC Persian has relied primarily on user-contributed footage and reports, since foreign correspondents are not permitted to work in Iran. BBC Persian has won several awards for its programming, including one from the Association for International Broadcasting for its coverage of the Iranian election in 2009.
