Lieutenant Commander Steve McGarrett, a former Navy SEAL, leads the task force. The series begins before the creation of the task force, with an arms dealer killing McGarrett's father. McGarrett goes to Hawaii to track him down. While there, the governor, Pat Jameson, asks him to lead the force. He declines, but later changes his mind.
McGarrett chooses the rest of the task force, which originally consists of a Honolulu detective named Danny Williams, a former detective named Chin Ho Kelly, and Chin's cousin, a rookie officer named Kono Kalakaua. McGarrett meets Chin, a protege of his father, while investigating the arms dealer. Chin left the department due to an accusation of corruption, but after he proclaims his innocence, McGarrett asks him to join the force.
Another prominent character in the series is Dr. Max Bergman, a medical examiner. Although he starts as a recurring character, he becomes part of the main cast by season two. As the series progresses, the force adds several other members.Learn more about Art & Literature
