Spotify plays songs based on information provided by the user, such as an artist's name. In the free version of Spotify, advertisements play between songs and users are allowed to skip up to six songs per hour. The premium version has no advertisements and allows users to skip an unlimited number of songs.
Pandora uses the Music Genome Project to play recommended songs based on a song, artist or genre the user likes. It allows users to create stations. The free version of Pandora has advertisements, but upgrading to Pandora One removes the advertisements and provides other features.
Songza also plays songs based on user preferences. It has a music concierge feature that recommends playlists based on the day and time. For example, it may recommend a workout playlist early on a weekday morning, or a party playlist on a Saturday night.
Artists looking to promote their work can upload songs to SoundCloud. Since users upload their own songs, the application doesn't typically have songs by major artists. Premium accounts are available for musicians.Learn more about Art & Literature
