Application to the Jerry Yarnell online school is made through signing up on the official website at Yarnell Studio & School of Fine Art LLC. The student enrolls by choosing from a selection of subscription packages.
There are three price plans available as of March 2015. The most flexible is the $25 monthly plan, according to Yarnell's website. The bi-annual plan is $125, and there is a yearly option for $250. After registration and payment have been made, the student gains 24-hour access to all of the lessons in the online school. There are video sessions which allow students to paint along with Yarnell, an internationally known artist, as he provides detailed instructions of his techniques. Some are standalone clips, while others are parts of series.
Each video concentrates on how to master the strokes used in achieving a particular lighting or layering effect. The student also learns how to choose the appropriate type and texture of paint to bring out the desired hue on different kinds of canvases. The classes further detail the brush sizes and bristles which should be used depending upon the type of look the student is striving for in a painting. Students are free to use their own equipment, but if they are beginners, the school has an online store where artists can purchase the recommended paints and other products.
