AMC is neither free nor pay-per-view. Rather, AMC is a cable channel usually included on the "basic" tier, meaning that customers receive it as part of a bundle of several different channels for which they pay a flat monthly fee.
It may seem as if AMC is free. Unlike HBO or other "premium" subscription channels, viewers do not individually subscribe to AMC. Rather, they subscribe to a package of channels that includes AMC as well as other common cable channels, such as FX, BRAVO and Lifetime. The channels charge the cable companies a per-user subscription fee, and the cable companies bundle these fees together and charge customers for all of them at once.
