AlDub is a Filipino daytime television phenomenon involving actors Maine Mendoza and Alden Richards. The pair is considered a supercouple, or "love team," with the name derived from a mash-up of Richards' real first name and Mendoza's character name, Yaya Dub.
The partnership between Mendoza and Richards began in 2015, when they both began appearing on the Filipino noontime variety show, "Eat Bulaga." Specifically, as of 2015, the pair perform a soap-opera parody segment called "Kalyeserye" (Street Series) that usually lasts 30 minutes to a full hour and occupies part of the portion of the program entitled "Juan for all, all for Juan." While Mendoza plays a fictional character imbued with her famous Dubsmash abilities, Richards plays a fictionalized version of himself.
The trademark communication of the AlDub love team is through a split-screen format, in which the two dialog through the use of audio samples and handwritten messages. The samples themselves are derived from a number of media, including popular songs, movies and other television series. In "Kalyeserye," the pair participates in improv acting scenarios, often with accompanying Filipino comedians Wally Bayola, Paolo Ballesteros and Jose Manalo. On September 26, 2015, the show's popularity was exhibited by a then-unprecedented 25.6 million tweets in a single day.
