The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta is held annually in early October in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The Fiesta began in 1972 and lasts for nine days each year.
It is the largest hot air balloon festival in the world, and upwards of 500 balloons are displayed at each Fiesta. A set of predictable wind currents known as the "Albuquerque Box" allow for consistent weather for the celebration each year. There are several events to participate in, including mass ascensions, races, and special shape rodeos. There are also competitions of speed, skill and piloting. It is held at Balloon Fiesta Park where the Anderson-Abruzzo Albuquerque International Balloon Museum was opened in 2005.
