Is Advice From Jim Cramer Reliable?

Financial television show host Jim Cramer has a poor track record of picking stocks as of 2013, according to CBS News . He has been particularly unreliable at recommending when to sell stocks, having advised viewers to sell many of the top performing stocks in 2012 before they made gains.

In 2012, Jim Cramer recommended selling Netflix, Best Buy, Green Mountain Coffee and Hewlett Packard stock several months before each made significant price gains. These stocks went on to gain between 115 and 175 percent of their values at the time of the sell recommendation. The odds of making these many poor stock picks for top performing stocks in a year are on par with the odds of winning the lottery, according to a CBS analyst's calculations.
