Roku devices can be activated by going to roku.com/link and entering the code displayed on-screen after connecting it to a television. Once installation and set up are complete, including the wireless Internet connection, a unique alphanumeric code is displayed.
The code generated after device set up and installation allows a user to either link their Roku to an existing account or create a new account. Using a single account can simplify set up in homes where multiple users have common interests. Alternately, parents can choose to create a separate account for Roku devices being used by children so that the content available is limited to age-appropriate streaming. This is especially noteworthy when it comes to private Roku channels, which are not monitored by the company. Further, it can streamline parents' channel listings, leaving room for more grown-up content.
The Roku system can also be enabled with a PIN code to prevent unauthorized charges from being triggered. Many channels and movies are available for purchase on Roku's listings. There are also a considerable number of free channels and publicly accessible movies to choose from, with more being added constantly. As of January, 2014, Roku advertised having more than 31,000 movie titles and 1,200 channels.
