The acronym RFD in RFD-TV stands for Rural Free Delivery. Rural Free Delivery refers to a service started by the U.S. Post Office in 1893 that extended free home mail delivery to people residing in rural areas. Citizens living in urban areas had received free home mail delivery since 1863.
RFD-TV strives to provide a similar service as the U.S. Post Office's Rural Free Delivery through 24-hour television programming directed at a rural audience. RFD-TV topics include agriculture, equine and the rural lifestyle, and traditional country music. As of 2015, RFD-TV is available in more than 41 million homes in the United States. RFD-TV was founded in 2000 by Patrick Gottsch.
