Aaliya first appeared on the television show "Star Search" at the age of 10 but did not sign her record deal with Blackground Records until the age of 12. Shortly after signing the deal, she met R. Kelly, who would go on to mentor her. R. Kelly was the lead songwriter and producer on her debut album, which would go to sell over three million copies. Her debut single "Back & Forth" topped the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart for three weeks. Her single "If Your Girl Only Knew" from her second album would also go on to top the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.
