Desconocer is an opposite of conocer, formed by adding the negative prefix des-.
Desconocen los principios fundamentales.
They don’t know the basic principles.
Desconocer is often used in journalistic style, when there is a lack of precise information about an event.
A última hora de ayer, se desconocía si había habido victimas.
Late last night it was not known whether there had been any fatalities.
Aún se desconocen las causas del accidente.
The cause of the accident is still unknown.
