obtener, verb:
to obtain, to get

The general concept behind obtener is obtaining or getting something.

Esperamos obtener mejores resultados este año.
We’re hoping to get better results this year.

But when you use it with words such as premio, medalla and victoria, it conveys the idea of winning:

Ambos obtuvieron el premio Nobel.
They both won the Nobel Prize.

Ni siquiera obtuvo medalla.
He didn’t even win a medal.
