Decimals and fractions are both ways to express part of a whole number. A decimal holds a value in tenths, hundredths, thousandths, and so forth. They are denoted by placing a decimal point between the ones position in a whole number of and tenths position, which is the first decimal place holder. Decimals can be converted into fractions, and vice versa using a simple formula. In order to convert
. a decimal to a fraction, set up the decimal in a fraction of equal value. For example, if the decimal value is 0.526, the fractional equivalent is 526/ 1000. If the decimal stretches to the hundredths place, the bottom value of the fraction is 100, if it only goes to the tenth position the bottom value is 10, and so on. This can be determined by counting the number of values past the decimal point, and adding that many zeros behind a one. After setting up the basic fraction, the numbers must be reduced to the lowest possible fraction. For repeating numbers, the process is similar. For example,to convert 0.1818181818- to a fraction, count the numbers in the repeating part (in this case, two). Then set it up in an equation where x=.181818181818-. Multiply both sides by 100, because 100 has two zeros (100x = 18.1818. Then, subtract Subtract the original equation with the value 1x, from the second equation with the value 100x. from equation, in our example this results in the simplified equation 99x = 18. Divide both sides of the equation by 99, to get the fraction 18/99. This fraction can then be reduced to 2/11.In the computer age, there are many websites with conversion charts for solving decimals and fractions. However, it can be helpful to know how to do the long-hand version when a calculator is not handy.
