An abnormal mammogram is not uncommon. It is said that up to 10% of all mammograms come back as abnormal. When a mammogram picks up tiny deposits of calcium within the breast tissue, this is what is known as a calcification. These calcifications within the tissue can either be benign or malignant and only a doctor will be able to tell you what he or she thinks of the abnormal mammogram. They may
. suggest a biopsy, or they may simply want to keep an eye on the calcifications and look for any changes over a certain period of time. The most important thing to do is to not panic until more information is known. Many benign abnormalities within the breast tissue is common and easily treated and it is actually the rare cases of abnormalities that are cause for concern. Remember to always talk with your doctor and stay on the same page before making decisions on possible treatments and procedures that will come from an abnormal mammogram result.
