Two common methods of dividing the abdomen are popular. The quadrant system is the older of the two, dividing the abdomen with a medial sagittal plane and a transverse plane centered at the umbilicus. From the body's own perspective, this system creates four quadrants: the right upper quadrant or Quadrant One; the left upper quadrant or Quadrant Two; the right lower quadrant or Quadrant Three;
. and the left lower quadrant or Quadrant Four.In the right upper quadrant are the right lobe of the liver, the gallbladder, the common bile duct, the right kidney and suprarenal gland, the head of the pancreas, distal portions of the stomach, and proximal portions of the small intestine. In the left upper quadrant are the left lobe of the liver, the left kidney and suprarenal gland, the body and tail of the pancreas, the spleen, and most of the stomach.In the right lower quadrant are the proximal portions of the large intestine, the vermiform appendix, the abdominal portion of the right ureter from the kidney, the urinary bladder if it is full enough, a woman's right ovary and fallopian tube, approximately half of a woman's uterus, and the abdominal part of a man's right spermatic cord. In the left lower quadrant lies much of the small intestine, distal portions of the large intestine, the abdominal portion of the left ureter from the kidney, a woman's left ovary and fallopian tube, the other half of her uterus, and the abdominal part of a man's left spermatic cord.Portions of both the small and large intestines appear in all four quadrants, so the exact nature of a structure such as the duodenum, jejeunum, or ileum will determine which quadrant. In addition to the quadrant system is a 9-division system in which the umbilical region is bordered above by the epigastric region and below by the hypogastric region. On either side of the epigastric is, from the body's perception, the left hypochondriac and right hypochondriac regions. On either side of the umbilicus are the left and right lumbar regions. The hypogastric region is bordered by the left and right iliac regions.
