The TAKS exam is the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills, which is the main exam given to students in Texas. These exams are given starting in grade 3 and then annually up to the exit level exam. Study guides for these exams are used to help prepare students for the test and to help them learn the proper skill sets. This exam is extremely important for public school students within the state
. of Texas. Students who are home schooled or attend private schools do not need to take this exam. All public school students must pass the exit level TAKS to graduate from high school. Juniors and seniors are offered five chances to pass the test in their last two years of school. The Texas Education Agency, located online at http://www.tea.state.tx.us/index3.aspx?id=60, has TAKS study guides available for all grade levels in English, and in Spanish for some grades as well. These guides cover all of the subjects tested, including mathematics, reading, writing, social studies and science. Teachers can download the materials for their students to study and prepare for the exam. Pearson Education, which is the company that developed and scores the exam, has interactive study guides available online as well. These are located at http://perspective.pearsonaccess.com/perspective/appmanager/tx/family. The guides are available for students and teachers to print, or to accomplish online. Some schools in the state of Texas also have old tests available online for teachers and students to review. Georgetown ISD is one of these schools with assessment strategies for the exam available at http://www.georgetownisd.org/ccorner/socstudies/AssessmentStrategiesforTAKS.asp. This site allows users to review the exam from previous years, along with the answer key. This enables students to practice at taking the exam to ensure they have the skills needed to pass their assessment for their grade level and subject matter as well.
