Reading literature like a professor does not mean reading it in a distinctive monotone with occasional inflections. It means reading critically and understand (or attempting to understand) the writing's origins in the context of history, artistic influences and personal events. Knowing where a work came from is sometimes as important as the work itself, and professors understand this. Critical
. reading can follow many different perspectives. What is the historical context of the work? What events does it discuss and what was going on while written? In " Farewell to Arms" the protagonist abandons the Army, which he felt abandoned him, but to understand this, students must learn about World War I, the expatriate movement in Europe and even the penalties for desertion in the Army. All this combines knowledge of history with fiction, bringing remarkable insight into the novel.A biographical approach takes into account the author's experiences. In " Farewell to Arms" the protagonist drove an ambulance and fell in love with a nurse. Hemingway himself fell in love with nurse during World War I after driving an ambulance and then abandoned the US in favor of European life. This is identical to the character. Learning about Hemingway himself gives readers a perspective of the novel's plot and inspiration.A literary approach combines the influences of Hemingway's contemporaries on his work. Many argue that the early 20th century marked the beginning of the modern novel, and Hemingway spent his days surrounded by dozens of writers, poets and artists, all influencing one another. Gertrude Stein would prove to be one of the largest contributors to Hemingway's style, creating his terse writing style.Whichever perspective chosen (or whether choosing all three), a reader benefits from taking into account the events of and around a writer's life in reading a work, learning not only the story, but from where the story comes.More reference links: http://www.tc.umn.edu/~jewel001/CollegeWriting/READSPEAKTHINK/READ/ReadingLit.htm#Critical http://www.brocku.ca/english/jlye/criticalreading.php
