The Southfield Eccentric newspaper was a weekly newspaper which served the Detroit area and its suburbs. It was recently combined with several other newspapers in a cost-saving move by Gannett Co., Inc., by whom the newspaper is owned. With the trends of declining newspaper sales due to people obtaining news and information online, the consolidation of the Southfield Eccentric is part of a
. nationwide trend not just confined to the Detroit area. In the Southfield, Michigan area, the paper was merged with the Mirror newspaper and will now be published under the name "South Oakland Eccentric", which will cover a wider geographical area. Other versions of the Eccentric and Observer newspapers will either be closed completely or merged into other newspapers based on community circulation. There have been minor layoffs as a result of these mergers, but many workers will get to keep their jobs since the papers will not be discontinued altogether. The new South Oakland Eccentric began publication on June 7, 2009.
