A case study on child development is usually separated into six parts. The purpose of a documented case study is to monitor and track where a child is emotionally, cognitively, socially, and physically and where he or she should be in the future. It is especially helpful for physicans and school psychologists, as well parents and any other professional who will work with the child in a school or
. health care setting. The first part of a case study is an abstract and a history of the child's life from the prenatal stage through birth and infancy. This includes, if possible, the history of the pregnancy and what the baby's health was like. This shows where the child is developmentally. The growth, height and weight is documented from birth to present time. Important details such as whether he or she has mastered developmental benchmarks are noted in the case study. Special attention to home life and the child's likes and dislikes are recorded. If there are any impending changes such as the birth of a new child in the home or a parent's divorce, this is also noted. Special attention to where the child is excelling and where he or she should be is also included in the case study. The second and third parts of the case study focuses on the physical development of the child, and documents gross and fine motor skills and their mastery in detail. The case worker notes what he or she has witnessed while in the company of the child. Next, the caseworker logs the cognitive development such as vocabulary and language development and reasoning skills. The fourth and fifth parts of the case study center around the emotional and social development of the child as well as the case worker's specific reflections (i.e. what the caseworker has learned as a result of observing the child and what he or she would like to learn in the immediate future as related to the child's development).Part six contains supplemental materials such as graphs and charts with percentiles noted that pertain to such issues as where a child is and where he or she needs to be in the immediate future. To summarize, a case study is the analysis of a person's psychological and/or medical viewpoint. It is the study of one subject which notes success as well as failure. In a case study involving a child, some of the focus may be on things like: characteristics, health, motor skills and nutritional habits. Self-concept may also be a factor in this kind of study.
