Americans do not have the opportunity to travel overseas and they may not have met a lot of people from different cultures. This is especially true for people in very small towns, or at schools that do not have diversity. Going overseas can expose these students to new cultures and diverse people. It allows them to experience life outside of the United States, while also remaining in a safe environment. Another reason to study abroad is to see another country without spending a lot of money. Many students applying to study abroad can get a scholarship or grant to subsidize their trip. This allows them to see a new country without having to pay as much money as a usual tourist. Plus, the student is usually housed in the school dorms or with a local family, which helps save even more money. A third reason to study abroad is to earn academic credits while experiencing a new area. Most colleges and universities allow students studying abroad to transfer the credits they earned at the foreign school. Students should double check with their school's program to ensure that the credits do transfer. If they do, then it allows a student to earn credits towards their degree, while also seeing a new country and doing some traveling. A final reason to study abroad is to learn a foreign language. Most college students are required to take a foreign language at some point during their college career. These students can practice the language in a country that has it for their official language.
