Prentice Hall is recognized as a major educational publisher. It is a subsidiary of Pearson Education, Inc., which is currently based in the town of Upper Saddle River, New Jersey. Prentice Hall publishes print and digital content for educational materials geared towards grades 6 through 12. The company also publishes material for the higher-education market. Dr. Charles Gerstenberg, a well-known
. law professor, and one of his students, Richard Ettinger, founded Prentice Hall on October 13, 1913. Gerstenberg and Ettinger made the decision to take their mothers' maiden names, which were Prentice and Hall, to name their new company. Gerstenberg and Ettinger created what would later form the premier U.S. publisher of academic, business, and professional books. Two years after the formation of the company, Prentice Hall published the first book on taxation in loose-leaf format. This was done in response to their colleagues' needs for completely up-to-date information on rapidly changing tax laws. Much later, in 1950, Prentice Hall formed its first Educational Book Division. Over a decade after that, in 1961, the company formed the Prentice Hall Business and Professional Books Division. Prentice Hall was acquired by Gulf and Western Industries in 1984, and was then incorporated into that company's publishing division, Simon & Schuster. Simon & Schuster's educational division, including Prentice Hall, was sold to Pearson Education, Inc. by Gulf and Western successor Viacom in 1998. Prentice Hall worksheets typically follow along with the textbooks correlating to each subject. Prentice Hall textbooks and worksheets are still incorporated into the teaching material provided by Pearson Education, Inc.
