Plagiarism is a major problem at nearly every educational level from elementary school to college. Plagiarism statistics are difficult to quantify, as by definition it is a clandestine behavior and unless caught, students and others must self-identify as plagiarizers and admit to the behavior. However, attempts have been made to quantify plagiarism, and a major study by the Psychological Record
. showed that 36% of undergraduate college students admitted plagiarizing materials written by others. A study from 1996 showed that in 1969, over 58 percent of high school students let someone else copy their work, and by 1989 that number had risen to over 97 percent.
