People generally have warm memories for the first time they have experienced something. A first car, a first kiss and a first step are all recorded and remembered fondly by parents and participants. Some of these newly minted students will find easy success and others will struggle greatly. Some of these children will love school and others will learn to dread the alarm clock and everything associated with school. The first time a new student meets a teacher, that teacher lays a very important foundation. That teacher can be caring, welcoming and encouraging. On the other hand, that teacher can be intimidating, aloof and judgmental. If this is the case, a student might learn to dread school and develop negative feelings about education. Teachers can be found in other venues than school, however. Many people find a first teacher at church, in an organization like scouting or through a big brother/big sister program. A first teacher might even be a grandparent, a parent or an older brother or sister. Regardless of where a student finds a first teacher, the important thing to remember is that a teacher has a great responsibility. A teacher has the opportunity to help shape a life. A teacher must take this responsibility seriously and consider all actions. While society cannot hold teachers to infallible standards, teachers should be prepared to be subject to scrutiny from the general public because of the very special position they hold.
