Moron Air force Base was activated on June 1st,1957 and fell under the jurisdiction of the Strategic Air Command. Between 1957 and 1969 the base played host to various commands and aircraft. In 1969 the base was redesignated a Stanby Dispersal Base and its personnel dropped to 400 servicemen. From 1969 until 1983 the base stayed in various caretaker modes with a dwindling number of support staff.
. In 1983 due to an agreement with the Spanish government a tanker squadron was stationed permanently at the base. Currently the base supports tankers, elements of the Air Mobility Command and is an abort landing site for the Space Shuttle.
