Lauderdale Lakes is located 5 miles north of Elkhorn, WI, in Walworth County. It is under the control of The Lauderdale Lakes Lake Management District. In 1841, two New York pioneers traveled to Milwaukee to check out government lands for sale. The two men then set out on foot toward the south, and ended up purchasing 160 acres of land adjacent to the lakes now known as Lauderdale Lakes, and then
. returned to their homes in New York. In 1842, one of the pioneers, James Lauderdale returned with his family to settle on the site. He later established a trading center, and after extensive bargaining was able to convince the government to establish a post office, at which time the area became known as Lauderdale, and the group of three lakes became known as Lauderdale Lakes.
