A good vocabulary is considered one of the largest keys to success in communication. Improving vocabulary is a simple task, but does require some effort. An improved vocabulary is helpful when testing, when applying for jobs, when performing written tasks at work and in every day communications. Children learn new vocabulary daily, for example a child of eight will learn more new words in a week
. then a normal adult will in an entire year. Sadly an adult under normal circumstances only learn about 20 new words a year. So when you encounter a new word approach it like a child would, try to determine the meaning by the context it is used in. Second ask those around you if they know what it means. Third look it up, the dictionary is the best resource you have. Word games are an excellent way to learn new words. Scrabble can introduce you to many new words, challenging the other player when they use a word you do not know will encourage you to look up new words. Crossword puzzles and synonym games are other excellent options. Be a fierce reader, dare to read challenging books and keep your dictionary handy to look up new words. Easy reading is relaxing but not lucrative for improving vocabulary. Do not skip unknown words, pause and look them up. Keep a notebook of new words. When you learn a new word add it to your notebook along with its definition. Remember the old adage " use it or lose it". Integrate new words into your working vocabulary. Elaborate never use generics like nice, okay, great where a larger more elaborate word will do. Most of all be courageous, challenge yourself and rise to the challenge. Read outside of your normal box, study the new words you find, play games with words to broaden your experience and experiment with the new words your find.
