"Grading on a curve is sometimes used by teachers when they see that many of their students have not performed as well as expected and in order to reflect the general learning ability of all the students, a curve is used. In this way, those who scored very low will have an opportunity to have a higher score. There are a couple of ways to grade on a curve. One can take the highest scoring
. person's grade and whatever points are needed to reach 100, is then added to every student's grade: e.g. 85 (highest score) +15 is 100. So now the student who received a 50 +15 = 65 has passed while before s/he would have failed.Another way to grade on a curve is to add a percentage to every student's score in order to raise the grade i.e. perhaps 20% of the test was not really taught or reviewed in class so most of the students naturally did not do as well on this portion of the exam. Lastly, another way to grade on a curve is to drop the question that most students failed ot answer correctly, thus automatically raising every person's grade."
