The GATE, or Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering, is jointly administered by the Indian Institute of Science and the Indian Institutes of Technologies. Indias National Coordination Board, composed of the Department of Higher Education, the GATE committee, the Ministry of Human Resource Development and the government of India, requires all students seeking admission to post-graduate programs
. achieve an acceptable GATE score. The GATE committee contains members of the administering bodies and is solely responsible for determining the content of the exam, its grading and the issuance of test results. The following types of candidates are eligible to take the GATE: Graduates of and students in their final year of university-level studies in engineering, technology and architecture Masters degree-holders and final year Masters candidates in the fields of science, mathematics, statistics, computer applications and similar fields Students participating in integrated Masters degree programs who are enrolled in their second year or above and students in dual degree programs for engineering and technology Candidates who have completed exam equivalents of degrees, administered by certain professional societies, as well as students who have completed section A of similar professional courses Composed of a single so-called "paper" containing 65 questions with a maximum score of 100, examinees have three hours in which to complete the exam. All questions are multiple choice. Students scores are calculated using a formula that takes into account the examinees score, the average grades of all examinees, a standard deviation of grades from all examinees within the past two years for a specific version of the exam, or "paper," as well as for all past takers of any paper.
