The Charlotte Danielson framework for teaching is a research-based model for organizing and demystifying the principles of teaching. Grouped into four domains (planning and preparation, classroom environment, instruction, and professional responsibilities), it has 22 components and 76 smaller elements. The Charlotte Danielson framework scientifically structures the act of teaching. In the first
. domain, Domain 1, the teacher begins planning and preparation as it begins laying the groundwork for what it takes to be an effective teacher in a classroom setting. As the teacher acts upon the first domain, their duties are: demonstrating knowledge of content and pedagogy demonstrating, being aware of knowledge of students, setting instructional outcomes, demonstrating knowledge of resources, designing coherent instruction and designing student assessments. The second domain, Domain 2, focuses on the classroom environment. According to this domain the teacher's responsibilities includes creating an environment of respect and rapport, establishing a culture for learning, managing student behavior, managing classroom procedures and organizing physical space. In the third domain, Domain 3, the focus of this domain revolves around how the teacher should assert themselves in an effort to make sure that their students are getting the mot possible out of a given lesson. The domain states that the teacher should focus on instruction, communicating with students, using questioning and discussion techniques, engaging students in learning, using assessment in instruction, demonstrating flexibility and responsiveness. In the fourth and final domain, Domain 4, it encourages the proper behavior that a teacher should be mindful of outside of just teaching their class because they have professional responsibilities that come with the job. Professional responsibilities include reflecting on teaching, maintaining accurate records, communicating with families, participating in a professional community, growing and developing professionally, showing professionalism. The Charlotte Danielson framework for teaching can be utilized as a tool for evaluating teaching performance as well as a set of guidelines.
