An elementary school is a type of school in the United States for young children. Elementary school frequently begins with Kindergarten or the first grade at ages five or six and continues to either the fifth or sixth grade (ages 10 or 11). Students in elementary school, at least in earlier grades, frequently have one teacher teach all major subjects (English, Math, Social Studies, Reading,
. Science), while switching teachers for Gym, Health, Art, and Music. As students progress to later grades, they may switch teachers for more or all subjects. Elementary school students typically receive a "recess" period at around noon in which they can play inside or outside with students from different classes within their grade level or with students among several grade levels. After elementary school, students progress to middle school (grades 6-8 or 7-8, depending on the school) and then high school (grades 9-10). Elementary schools may be public or private.
