Studying abroad is often a memorable experience that can enrich both a student's life and future. Diving into a new culture, learning a new language and cultivating international connections or even one's spirit of adventure - are undeniable benefits that come with pursuing education in another country. However, there are a few negative aspects of such an endeavor that a prospective international
. student may decide to consider. Studying abroad often means that the student is uprooted and placed into a culture that may prove very different that the one in which he or she has grown. The cultural shock can manifest in visible or subtle ways, but is often an extra burden with which the student has to deal. From currency and etiquette to climate and teaching methods, the new country is an additional subject of study for international students. Maybe the biggest challenge is the fact that the student leaves behind not only his immediate family, but a network of people and connections that he has built in a lifetime - and their unrelenting support. The foreign character of the culture and the occasional bouts of loneliness can lead a student to feeling homesick and helpless. Depending on the amount of time spent in a foreign country, the student may come to terms with these feelings and learn how to manage them so that they not hinder him in taking advantage of this unique experience. An obvious disadvantage of studying abroad is the new language. Unless the student makes serious efforts to study it, this language may prove an impediment to his or her success. Simply living in the new country and facing the new language every day is not enough to learn it. Personal effort is always needed in order to achieve fluency and to be able to carry a student's workload. Finally, studying abroad is not cheap. From boarding and food to traveling expenses and the cost of education, money may turn into a major impediment. Often students do not have the right to work in a foreign country, which may lead to serious financial challenges.
