Delta Sigma Theta is a Greek lettered sorority founded in 1913 by 22 women at Howard University in Washington. These young college women wanted to help those in need while promoting excellence in academics. The sorority is almost one hundred years old now, and boasts close to a thousand chapters worldwide. The majority of the 250, 000 members of this sisterhood are Black, educated women. The
. sorority has many notable past members, including Natalie Cole.Chants, songs and cheers are common among sororities, and Delta Sigma Theta is no exception. They are a part of the tradition and history of both sororities and fraternities. Many of the chants promote rivalry among the sororities, but the sororities maintain that the chants are part of their competitiveness, and that they maintain respect for the other sororities. One Delta Sigma Theta Sorority cheer is as follows:
"DST, My Sorority.
Always on my mind,
oo-oopin' all the time.
Wearing nine pearls,
sisterhood and service.
That's our purpose-- DST. . .
You know you wanna be!"
The following is a chant that was written by the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority as a "diss", or insult, towards their rival sorority, the AKAs (Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority).
"In 1908,
you started it true.
Deltas were AKA's just like you.
But 22 ladies made a deal to be
cute sisters and plain ol' REAL
No ivy, no mirror, no pink, no green.
The real sorority started in 1913.
So it's cool AKA, do what you do.
We can skee-wee, but you can never oo-oop."
The following is a short chant promoting the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority called "Delta All The Way."
"If I was too cool wouldn't it be nice. To see a true stepper step for crimson and white. Delta all the way. Delta's what they say. Is what some little girls want to be someday."
