While there are several templates for creating a curriculum vitae, also known as a resume, the most effective follow a pre-defined template. Recruiters reading through hundreds of resumes know exactly where to look on this template, and resumes that make information difficult to find are thrown out.
On the very top of the resume is complete contact information for the applicant, .
including e-mail addresses and phone numbers. Then, the applicant's objective is placed on the resume; this is often a shorter version of the cover letter. The applicant's skills are listed next. The applicant's previous positions are listed after the skills, from newest to oldest; this gives the recruiter an idea of where the applicant last worked. Finally, the education and references are listed. Skills, job history and education are sometimes in different order; in general, the most important information is placed at the top.
