Brookline Adult & Community Education, formerly known as the Brookline Center For Adult Education, is located in Brookline, Massachusetts outside of Boston. Formed in 1832 as the Brookline Lyceum Society, it is one of the states oldest non-credit public education programs. . self-funded through course fees, and serves 50 neighboring communities in the Boston area. Classes available at Brookline Adult & Community Education cover a multitude of subjects, such as painting, photography, computer software that includes a variety of Windows and Mac applications, dancing, physical fitness, cooking, indoor sports, bridge, self-help, business management, investing, sewing, knitting, woodworking, glass fusing, English as a second language, yoga, Tai Chi, soap making, interior design, literature, film, acting, singing, musical instruments, test preparation, screenwriting and short story writing. All of these classes are available on an a la carte basis and last from four to eight sessions with one session per week. In addition, BA&CE offers one-session special events courses and programs for children in the summertime. These programs include creative arts, theater arts, active science, basketball, cooking, physical activity and reading. There are also lectures that students can attend in addition to their classes. The instructors come from all walks of life: artists, poets, computer programmers, chefs, doctors and business professionals who teach their respective courses out of love for the work that they do and the desire to share their knowledge with others who wish to learn. Experienced teachers who wish to teach classes at BA&CE can propose courses to the administrators.
