AP Biology Labs can focus upon a myriad of different topics and concepts within the field. Biology deals with the nature of life itself. Important sub-disciplines include cells and molecules, heredity and phylogeny. An AP course is taken by high school students and is meant to mimic what that student would encounter during a college-level introductory course. With adequate performance, one can
. earn college credits in these courses, but they are usually much harder than other high school classes. Students are expected to retain a much greater amount of information that they may be used to, and a fundamental analysis of concepts and theories is required. One possible AP biology lab could deal with the concepts of mitosis and meiosis. Both of these processes describe the way genetic material is passed between cells and the physical characteristics of daughter cells. Meiosis produces haploid gametophytes whereas mitosis produces diploid cells. Students are usually required to utilize microscopes to magnify specimens in an effort to gain a better understanding of these phenomena. Osmosis and diffusion are another two important concepts in biology. Osmosis deals with the permeability of the cell membrane with respect to water and diffusion is a result of the transfer of kinetic energy and momentum between the collision of molecules within cells. Some AP Biology courses include labs that deal with anatomy and physiology. The human body for example contains a number of different systems (cardiovascular, endocrine, digestive, skeletal, etc.) which interact to allow the body to function properly. Many of the concepts in AP Biology labs also require an adequate understanding of chemistry. Life is governed by DNA and RNA, which is a collection of amino acids and proteins that dictate the behavior of cells and organisms.
