An example of a typical 4th grade math array question would be: Meghan has four coins, consisting of a penny, a quarter, a dime, and a half-dollar. If Meghan wanted to arrange these coins in an array of lowest denomination to highest, what order would she need to place the coins in?The correct answer to the above question would be that Meghan would place the quarter, dime, nickel and penny in a single row.An array can also refer to an arrangement of items or series of terms in some geometric pattern, such as square grid comprised of 5 squares across and 5 squares down, in a matrix type arrangement. The example for this sort of array question would be as such: James makes an array that has 5 rows of five checkers. He wants to make two more arrays using the same amount of checkers, with more than one checker in each row. How many arrays are possible for James to make in this situation? How would these arrays appear?The answer to this question would be that the arrays would be the outer edges of the five rows. The array would appear as one verticle row of five checkers and one horizontal row of five checkers, with the connecting checker being in either corner, and there are four arrays possible.
