Breaking Dawn is the fourth and last book in The Twilight Saga, by Stephenie Meyer. This novel was released in 2008 to commercial success and critical acclaim worldwide, finishing the series in dramatic fashion. The previous book, New Moon, ends calmly with Bella and Edward getting engaged and planning their wedding. Breaking Dawn begins largely the same way. Bella and Edward tell Charlie what
. their intentions are, and to Bella's surprise, he offers little resistance. Charlie does advise Bella to tell her mother herself, just in case. Once again, her mother does not stand in the way, but does take the necessary route of making sure that what Bella is doing is the right thing and what she really wants.Jacob has gone missing from Forks and the reservation and Charlie decides to plaster signs around town with Jacob's face on them. Bella talks with Jacob's cousin Seth who tells her that, while he does not know exactly where he is located, he has gone north of the border into Canada. Edward goes to great lengths to protect Bella while she is still in human form, and towards that end, he buys her an embarrassingly expensive and luxurious Mercedes Benz. The car is apparently one of the safest on the road and includes every safety feature imaginable. On top of the car, Bella also reflects on all the other concessions she has made against her better judgment so that she can experience intercourse and marriage to Edward while still human. These concessions include the car, a full-ride scholarship to Dartmouth, a wedding that has blossomed into elegant and lavish, while it was originally intended as a simple affair. Alice plays a big role in this chapter, as well, from the planning of the wedding, to the calming of Bella and Charlie's nerves about the wedding and the future. This chapter sets the tone for the rest of the novel, which itself is divided into three parts.
