Microprocessors are defined as the component that actually brings a computer to life. The processor is the brain behind any type of computer, and the system will not function without this component. It is the same as a car that does not have an engine. Without an engine, a car will not run. The same principle holds true for microprocessors, without them a computer or peripheral device will not
. run.The processor's fundamental responsibility is to move data throughout the system. The data may include graphics, walls of text or information pertaining to a database. Any function that is performed by the computer runs through the microprocessor. The processor and the speed with which the data is moved are determined by gigahertz. The more gigahertz that a processor has the faster a computer runs. That has long been one of the fundamental misconceptions about the speed of a computer. Many believe that speed is in direct relation to the amount of RAM a computer contains. RAM of course refers to Random Access Memory, and this is memory that is used while a user is performing a specific action. RAM does play a role in how fast a computer processes information but does not determine the speed of data transfer. It is important to understand that there are many varieties and brands of microprocessors. Most come pre-loaded into the computer based on a model that is purchased. For example, a consumer may purchase a Hewlett Packard that comes with an Intel Pentium Processor. If this is the case, the consumer should expect the processor contains the highest amount of gigahertz available. The current speed for pre-loaded processors runs between one and four gigahertz. Obviously high- end computers contain the processors with the maximum amount of gigahertz. If a person understands that the processor is the brains behind the computer, they should have no problem finding exactly what they need.More reference links: http://www.en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Microprocessor_Design/Microprocessors http://www.encyclopedia.com/Computers_And_Computing
